Each construction had a certain relation with its own environment. The relation could be harmonious or on the contrary, disturbing.
In the middle of a community of residential houses with a strong and expressive roof structure there is an old concrete Bunker.
This strange volume is perturbing the residential area nearby and it is related with a negative image from the past. But the bunker as a
concrete mass holds also the idea of protection and refuge.
Task
Using the bunker as a plinth for a hotel -refuge for visitors- the new architecture has two objectives:
-Visual fragmentation of the concrete mass
-Adaptation to the environment by diluting the old identity of the bunker
Stripes
“With their optical stridency and binary rhythm the stripes stand out in any context. They create a strong contrast in any visual field and at the same time mask the individuality of whatever surface they cover, which is the double reason that they have long been used for convicts’ clothing.” Yve-Alain Bois – Kelly’s Trouvailles: Finding in France.
The fragmented concrete roofs are formed with irregular stripes, which imitate the shape of the residential roofs and subdue the bunker from the area at the same time. The dynamic and unconventional roof generate different kinds of rooms and apartments in
section but with a regular plan.
Light and colored glass
The light is only indirectly coming from the sides and through colored glass walls. It is a feature to create an immaterial strength to give color to the gray concrete surfaces and to play with various degrees of transparency, light and shade.
